First man on moon Neil Armstrong dead at 82

Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:15am EDT

(Reuters) - U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, who took a giant leap for mankind when he became the first person to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.

Armstrong died following complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent earlier this month, the family said in a statement, just two days after his birthday on August 5.

As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the dusty surface, Armstrong said: "?That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Those words endure as one of the best known quotes in the English language.

The Apollo 11 astronauts' euphoric moonwalk provided Americans with a sense of achievement in the space race with Cold War foe the Soviet Union and while Washington was engaged in a bloody war with the communists in Vietnam.

Neil Alden Armstrong was 38 years old at the time and even though he had fulfilled one of mankind's age-old quests that placed him at the pinnacle of human achievement, he did not revel in his accomplishment. He even seemed frustrated by the acclaim it brought.

"I guess we all like to be recognized not for one piece of fireworks but for the ledger of our daily work," Armstrong said in an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes" program in 2005.

He once was asked how he felt knowing his footprints would likely stay on the moon's surface for thousands of years. "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up," he said.

A VERY PRIVATE MAN

James Hansen, author of "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong," told CBS: "All of the attention that ... the public put on stepping down that ladder onto the surface itself, Neil never could really understand why there was so much focus on that."

The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The next year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.

Armstrong's post-NASA life was a very private one. He took no major role in ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the moon landing. "He's a recluse's recluse," said Dave Garrett, a former NASA spokesman.

Hansen said stories of Armstrong dreaming of space exploration as a boy were apocryphal, although he was long dedicated to flight. "His life was about flying. His life was about piloting," Hansen said.

Born August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong was the first of three children of Stephen and Viola Armstrong. He married his college sweetheart, Janet Shearon, in 1956. They were divorced in 1994, when he married Carol Knight.

Armstrong had his first joyride in a plane at age 6. Growing up in Ohio, he began making model planes and by his early teens had amassed an extensive aviation library. With money earned from odd jobs, he took flying lessons and obtained his pilot's license even before he got a car license.

In high school he excelled in science and mathematics and won a U.S. Navy scholarship to Purdue University in Indiana, enrolling in 1947. He left after two years to become a Navy pilot, flying combat missions in the Korean War and winning three medals.

FLYING TEST PLANES

After the war he returned to Purdue and graduated in 1955 with an aeronautical engineering degree. He joined the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), which became NASA in 1958.

Armstrong spent seven years at NACA's high-speed flight station at Edwards Air Force Base in California, becoming one of the world's best test pilots. He flew the X-15 rocket plane to the edge of space - 200,000 feet up at 4,000 mph.

In September 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut. He was command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission and backup command pilot for the Gemini 11 mission, both in 1966.

On the Gemini 8 mission, Armstrong and fellow astronaut David Scott performed the first successful docking of a manned spacecraft with another space vehicle.

Armstrong put his piloting skills to good use on the moon landing, overriding the automatic pilot so he and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin would not have to land their module in a big rocky crater.

Yet the landing was not without danger. The lander had only about 30 seconds of fuel left when Armstrong put it down in an area known as the Sea of Tranquility and calmly radioed back to Mission Control on Earth, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

Aldrin, who along with Armstrong and Michael Collins formed the Apollo 11 crew, told BBC radio that he would remember Armstrong as "a very capable commander and leader of an achievement that will be recognized until man sets foot on the planet Mars."

Armstrong left the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a year after Apollo 11 to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

DECLINES OFFERS TO RUN FOR OFFICE

After his aeronautical career, Armstrong was approached by political groups, but unlike former astronauts John Glenn and Harrison Schmitt who became U.S. senators, he declined all offers.

In 1986, he served on a presidential commission that investigated the explosion that destroyed the space shuttle Challenger, killing its crew of seven shortly after launch from Cape Canaveral in January of that year.

Armstrong made a rare public appearance several years ago when he testified to a congressional hearing against President Barack Obama administration's plans to buy rides from other countries and corporations to ferry U.S. astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Armstrong also said that returning humans to the moon was not only desirable, but necessary for future exploration -- even though NASA says it is no longer a priority.

He lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol.

"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away," the family said in their statement. "Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend."

His family expressed hope that young people around the world would be inspired by Armstrong's feat to push boundaries and serve a cause greater than themselves.

"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said.

Obama said that Armstrong "was among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time. ...

"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown - including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space. That legacy will endure - sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

Glenn, an original NASA astronaut with Armstrong, spoke of his colleague's humble nature. "He was willing to dare greatly for his country and he was proud to do that and yet remained the same humble person he'd always been," he told CNN on Saturday.

The space agency sent out a brief statement in the wake of the news, saying it "offers its condolences on today's passing of Neil Armstrong, former test pilot, astronaut and the first man on the moon."

Armstrong is survived by his two sons, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, NASA said.

Some controversy still surrounds his famous quote. The live broadcast did not have the "a" in "one small step for a man ..." He and NASA insisted static had obscured the "a," but after repeated playbacks, he admitted he may have dropped the letter and expressed a preference that quotations include the "a" in parentheses.

Asked to describe what it was like to stand on the moon, he told CBS:

"It's an interesting place to be. I recommend it."

Earlier today at IFA, Sony unveiled not only the VAIO Duo 11, but the VAIO Tap 20 which they are calling a Family Touch PC. Like the VAIO Duo 11, the Tap 20 will run on Windows 8 which means that it?s not entirely surprising to learn that it too will sport a touchscreen display, a 20? one at that.?

With its built-in kickstand, the Tap 20 can be propped up and when attached with a keyboard and mouse, could transform itself into a desktop of sorts. However when laid flat, the Tap 20 turns itself into a 20? tablet where families can gather around it and play digital board games on.

It comes with some proprietary Sony features, like ClearAudio+ which supposedly sets a new standard in audio technology, and OneTouch that lets the Tap 20 pair with other Sony NFC products simply by tapping them together without the need for complicated setup procedures.

Depending on your needs, the Tap 20 can be configured to sport Intel?s Core processors in either the i3, i5 or i7 variety. It will come with 4GB-8GB of RAM, a 750GB or a 1TB HDD, a display resolution of 1600?900, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB 3.0 connectivity and a built-in webcam. It will run on Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro. The Sony VAIO Tap 20 will be available from the end of October 2012 but in selected countries only. [Press release]

Bonanza of black holes, hot DOGs: NASA's WISE survey uncovers millions of black holes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission has led to a bonanza of newfound supermassive black holes and extreme galaxies called hot DOGs, or dust-obscured galaxies.

Images from the telescope have revealed millions of dusty black hole candidates across the universe and about 1,000 even dustier objects thought to be among the brightest galaxies ever found. These powerful galaxies, which burn brightly with infrared light, are nicknamed hot DOGs.

"WISE has exposed a menagerie of hidden objects," said Hashima Hasan, WISE program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "We've found an asteroid dancing ahead of Earth in its orbit, the coldest star-like orbs known and now, supermassive black holes and galaxies hiding behind cloaks of dust."

WISE scanned the whole sky twice in infrared light, completing its survey in early 2011. Like night-vision goggles probing the dark, the telescope captured millions of images of the sky. All the data from the mission have been released publicly, allowing astronomers to dig in and make new discoveries.

The latest findings are helping astronomers better understand how galaxies and the behemoth black holes at their centers grow and evolve together. For example, the giant black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, called Sagittarius A*, has 4 million times the mass of our sun and has gone through periodic feeding frenzies where material falls towards the black hole, heats up and irradiates its surroundings. Bigger central black holes, up to a billion times the mass of our sun, may even shut down star formation in galaxies.

In one study, astronomers used WISE to identify about 2.5 million actively feeding supermassive black holes across the full sky, stretching back to distances more than 10 billion light-years away. About two-thirds of these objects never had been detected before because dust blocks their visible light. WISE easily sees these monsters because their powerful, accreting black holes warm the dust, causing it to glow in infrared light.

"We've got the black holes cornered," said Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., lead author of the WISE black hole study and project scientist for another NASA black-hole mission, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). "WISE is finding them across the full sky, while NuSTAR is giving us an entirely new look at their high-energy X-ray light and learning what makes them tick."

In two other WISE papers, researchers report finding what are among the brightest galaxies known, one of the main goals of the mission. So far, they have identified about 1,000 candidates.

These extreme objects can pour out more than 100 trillion times as much light as our sun. They are so dusty, however, that they appear only in the longest wavelengths of infrared light captured by WISE. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope followed up on the discoveries in more detail and helped show that, in addition to hosting supermassive black holes feverishly snacking on gas and dust, these DOGs are busy churning out new stars.

"These dusty, cataclysmically forming galaxies are so rare WISE had to scan the entire sky to find them," said Peter Eisenhardt, lead author of the paper on the first of these bright, dusty galaxies, and project scientist for WISE at JPL. "We are also seeing evidence that these record setters may have formed their black holes before the bulk of their stars. The 'eggs' may have come before the 'chickens.'"

More than 100 of these objects, located about 10 billion light-years away, have been confirmed using the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, as well as the Gemini Observatory in Chile, Palomar's 200-inch Hale telescope near San Diego, and the Multiple Mirror Telescope Observatory near Tucson, Ariz.

The WISE observations, combined with data at even longer infrared wavelengths from Caltech's Submillimeter Observatory atop Mauna Kea, revealed that these extreme galaxies are more than twice as hot as other infrared-bright galaxies. One theory is their dust is being heated by an extremely powerful burst of activity from the supermassive black hole.

"We may be seeing a new, rare phase in the evolution of galaxies," said Jingwen Wu of JPL, lead author of the study on the submillimeter observations. All three papers are being published in the Astrophysical Journal.

JPL manages and operates WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The principal investigator, Edward Wright, is at UCLA. The mission was competitively selected under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory, Logan, Utah, and the spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing and archiving take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Was teen charged with attempted murder bullied?

A Baltimore County police officer speaks to a parent as students are evacuated from Perry Hall High School after a student was shot and critically wounded on the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 27.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

A Baltimore County, Md., high school student who opened fire on the first day of classes, critically wounding a classmate before being subdued by teachers, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault.

Baltimore County police confirmed to NBC News that the suspect in Monday's shooting, Robert Wayne Gladden, Jr., 15, has been charged as an adult and is being held without bail.

The 17-year-old victim in the shooting at Perry Hall High School -- a special needs student, according to NBC affiliate WBALTV.com???has not been identified. He remains in critical condition.

Police said Monday they didn't believe he was targeted by Gladden, who allegedly walked into the school cafeteria at about 10:45 a.m. on Monday and pulled out a gun. He fired one shot before being rushed by teachers, and another shot went off as teachers grabbed him, Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said.

Previous report: Student shot at Maryland high school on first day of class

Police say they believe Gladden acted alone. On his Facebook page Monday morning, under the name "Suicidal Smile," Gladden wrote, "First day of school, last day of my life," reported WBALTV.com.

On Monday evening, Gladden's father told reporters that his son had been bullied, but gave no further details or motive, according to NBCWashington.com. A woman who was at the home told reporters, "We are horrified. We did not see this coming and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and the victim's family."

Court documents show Gladden's parents divorced in 2010, reported WBALTV.com. The news station?went to the house where Gladden lives with his mother on Monday afternoon; a sign on the door read "We don't call 911," and had a picture of a revolver on it, reporters said.??No one in the house would comment on the shooting.

Gladden was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, and police said he was cooperating with investigators. He will have a preliminary hearing on Sept. 7, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Jordan Coates, a 17-year-old student who was in the cafeteria when the shooting happened, said he saw teachers, including guidance counselor Jesse Wasmer, pin Gladden against a vending machine.

"My back was to the door. I heard a pop and thought it was a bag because people do that, but then I heard another one," Coates told The Associated Press. "And I turned around and a teacher had a kid pinned up against the vending machine, and I saw the barrel, and another shot goes off and people just start running."

Coates credited Wasmer with helping to stop the shooting. Other students took to Twitter to thank him.

"He grabbed the gun from the kid and got him" until other teachers rushed over to help, Coates said.

Students returned to school on Tuesday, with extra security and stress counselors on hand to work with students and faculty, NBCWashington.com reported.

Perry Hall is a middle-class community along the Interstate 95 corridor, northeast of Baltimore city. The school is the largest in the county, with 2,200 students.

Carpet Tiles Are A Extremely Useful Type Of - Home Improvement ...

Carpet tiles are a extremely useful type of flooring with many unique advantages that sets them above regular carpeting. They are perfect for the house or for businesses and they conserve you a great deal of function whilst looking much better year spherical. Despite all this though, very few individuals it seems really consider carpet tile flooring when designing their home ? most likely because they are not conscious of it or not familiar with what it is. Here we will rectify that problem by looking at a selection of the benefits of carpet tiles and why they are this kind of a great addition to any home.

They Are Simpler to Clean: Carpets tiles are significantly simpler to thoroughly clean to than regular carpet ? merely because it is feasible to elevate them away from the carpet and thoroughly clean them yourself below the sink. That means that you can scrub them completely, use disinfectant, drench them, use boiling water and then allow them to dry out. You can even clean the underside of carpets tiles which you simply cannot do with other types of carpet simply because you cannot lift it up. With normal carpet you will have to vacuum completely as nicely as using regular carpet cleansing services that are a big upheaval and even then your carpet will appear dull and unclean much of the yr.

They Are Much more Hygienic: What this means is that your carpet tile flooring is much more hygienic than normal carpet. As you can elevate it up and thoroughly clean it completely that indicates you can eradicate germs, dirt and germs as nicely as washing things out this kind of as fleas and ticks. In other words your carpet will be as thoroughly clean as your clothing and all the way via, and this is extremely important if you want to lie down on it and allow your children do similarly.

You Can Keep Them: If you have normal carpet you are buying it just for that house. When you get up and transfer home that means leaving your carpets behind which is a large squander of money. Nevertheless with carpets tiles you can merely stack them up and take them with you ? and that means you can maintain them completely.

They?re Easier to Match: With carpets tiles all you require to do is to consider them and decline them down on the flooring exactly where you want them. As they are smaller sized they will easily match into location and you only require to cut the edge types to get them to fit below the skirting boards. You can do this your self in fact instead than having to pay for installation therefore conserving cash, and especially if you have an odd shaped space its perfect.

You Can Purchase Spares: Envision obtaining a new carpet and then tearing it the subsequent day. Annoying right? And all you can do is place a rug down and try not to believe about it. With carpet tile flooring though you just purchase spare tiles and then you can replace any that get damaged and no one will know.

Carpet tile flooring has a huge variety of advantages more than other types of flooring. Go to the links for carpet and tiles.

Female Punk rock band appeals conviction, Russian church critical

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A lawyer for the jailed members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot on Monday appealed against the three women's conviction for a protest against President Vladimir Putin at a church altar, but said he had little hope the verdict would be overturned.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after their February protest in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

The two-year prison sentences handed down to the activists for a "punk prayer" asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin have drawn sharp criticism from Western governments and musicians who say they should not be jailed.

Kremlin critics have called the jailing of the young women part of a clampdown that shows Putin will have little tolerance for dissent in a six-year presidential term he started in May following the biggest protests of his 12-year rule.

"If the court abides by the law it would throw out the verdict," said defense lawyer Nikolai Polozov.

"But being realists, understanding all the efforts the state has put into this case, we think it's unlikely the verdict will be overturned," he told Reuters by telephone.

Polozov said he hopes the sentences will be shortened or made conditional, meaning the women would be released instead of serving the 19 months or so that remain in their two-year sentences following their jailing in March.

But he said he has seen signs of a backlash against the Western support that may not bode well for softer sentences.

He cited critical reports in Russian media and suggestions supporters of Pussy Riot were behind the reported felling of wooden Christian crosses in two Russian regions over the weekend, which he alleged were a "provocation" aimed to discredit the group.

"This is a reaction to the support from the world community," said Polozov. "This does not increase our optimism."

The maximum sentence for the crime the women were accused of was seven years in jail, but after Putin said they had done "nothing good" but "should not be judged too harshly" the state prosecutor asked for three-year sentences.

Hours after the sentences were issued on August 17, the Russian Orthodox Church urged the state to show mercy to the women, raising the possibility it might back a presidential pardon or a reduction in their terms.

But a senior church representative on Monday seemed to suggest the women of Pussy Riot had not shown enough remorse.

"The Church called on the state to show mercy with the framework of the law in the hope they would not do anything like this again," Interfax quoted Vsevolod Chaplin, head of the church department for relations with society, as saying.

However, he said, "We know that some of them are now trying to justify what they did, and moreover, they say that certain actions will continue," Interfax quoted Chaplin as telling reporters in the southern city of Stavropol.

After police said they were searching for other members of Pussy Riot, a Twitter account called Pussy Riot Group - used by the group in the past - said this weekend that two members had fled Russia and "are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!"

On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry denounced Western criticism of the trial as politically motivated and said there were "elements of a clash of civilizations" in the Western condemnation.

(AP) ? The son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani network was been killed in an airstrike in Pakistan, Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Sunday, providing the first public confirmation of rumors that have been swirling for days about the key member of a militant group the U.S. considers one of the most dangerous in the region.

The Taliban rejected reports of Badruddin Haqqani's death, however, saying that he was alive and well in Afghanistan.

Haqqani's death would be a serious blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group, which has ties to both the Taliban and al-Qaida, has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, particularly in and around the capital city of Kabul, and poses perhaps the biggest threat to stability in the country.

Shafiqullah Tahiri, the spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security intelligence agency, said Haqqani was killed last week in an airstrike in Pakistan. He did not provide any further details, and would not say what information the agency's operatives were basing their conclusion on.

U.S. officials have declined comment on the reports.

But Tahiri's account is similar to one provided Saturday by a senior Taliban leader who said Haqqani was killed in a drone strike. It also hews closely to a version provided by Pakistani officials who said Saturday that they were 90 percent sure the militant commander was killed in a missile attack Tuesday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.

The Taliban, who are closely allied with the Haqqani network, rejected all reports of Haqqani's death.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.

"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email to reporters late Saturday. "Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy."

In a telephone call with The Associated Press on Sunday Mujahid again maintained that Haqqani was alive.

The territory where the American drone strikes generally occur are in Pakistan's remote and dangerous tribal regions, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death. And the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

The al-Qaida-allied Haqqani tribe runs a mafia-like smuggling operation and occasionally turns to terrorism with the aim of controlling its territory in eastern Afghanistan. The Haqqanis use Pakistani towns to plan, train and arm themselves with guns and explosives, cross into Afghanistan to attack NATO and Afghan forces, then retreat back across the border to safety.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. Tahiri said that Haqqani's responsibilities included arranging foreign suicide bombers, maintaining relations with other insurgent groups, recruiting Pakistani Taliban fighters for the Haqqani group and overseeing operations in southeastern Afghanistan and in Kabul.

"He was the mastermind of the organized suicide attacks in Kabul," Tahiri said, referring to a number of high-profile strikes in the Afghan capital targeting everything from hotels to Western embassies. Every time there has been a highly complex attack in Kabul involving coordination between multiple insurgents, American officials have pointed the finger at the Haqqanis.

In the latest such attack in June, gunmen stormed a lakeside hotel outside of Kabul and opened fire on Afghans having dinner, killing 18 people. The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan quickly attributed the attack to the Haqqani network, which has long operated as a sort of arm of the Taliban in the eastern part of the country.

Still, there are likely people waiting in the wings to replace Badruddin, said former Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh, now an opposition leader.

"They are going to find another person to replace him. What I know is that his elder brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is playing a larger role in the Haqqani network," Saleh said in an interview on Afghanistan's Tolo television. He said until the group's ability to operate across Afghanistan and Pakistan is limited, "killing their commanders or leaders will have its effect, but not that large of an effect."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

Obama-Romney race is focused on 7 states

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? On the eve of their national party conventions, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a close race to amass the requisite 270 Electoral College votes for victory. And the contest is exactly where it was at the start of the long, volatile summer: focused on seven states that are up for grabs.

Neither candidate has a significant advantage in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia, which offer a combined 85 electoral votes, according to an Associated Press analysis of public and private polls, spending on television advertising and numerous interviews with Republican and Democratic strategists in battleground states.

The analysis, which also took into account the strength of a candidate's on-the-ground organization and travel schedules, found that if the election were held today, Obama would have 19 states and the District of Columbia, offering 247 votes, solidly in his column or leaning his way, while Republican Romney would have 24 states with 206 votes.

Obama won all seven of the too-close-to-call states in 2008, and they are where the race will primarily be contested in the homestretch to the Nov. 6 election.

Ten weeks before Election Day, the AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive but rather is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that's been stubbornly close all year.

Among the unknowns that could shake up the electoral landscape before November: the latest unemployment figures that come out early next month, an unexpected foreign policy crisis in Syria or Iran and the outcome of the candidates' October debates.

Both sides are working to persuade the 23 percent of registered voters who said in an Associated Press-GfK poll that they are either undecided about the presidential race or iffy in their support for a candidate.

To woo them, the campaigns and political parties, along with allied groups with access to unlimited financial contributions, have already spent an astounding $540 million on television advertising, according to ad spending reports provided to the AP. And there's more to come.

Over the past three months, the campaign took a sharply negative turn, at times becoming nasty and personal.

Obama sought to define Romney early as a ruthless corporate raider for his time at the head of a private equity firm in Boston, and as an out-of-touch rich man keeping secrets about his wealth. Romney, in turn, worked to cast Obama as a failed president on a host of fronts, primarily the economy.

Both candidates have hit road bumps: Obama saw the unemployment rate rise to 8.3 percent and gave Republicans an opening to argue that he was unfriendly to small business. Romney had a widely panned foreign trip and made a series of potentially problematic comments, most recently joking about the debunked conspiracy theory regarding Obama's citizenship.

The national party conventions, starting with Republicans here, who convene Monday and start with a full schedule on Tuesday, and ending with Democrats the following week in Charlotte, N.C., will set the parameters of the fall campaign, and could provide each side with at least a temporary surge of support in national, if not battleground state, polls.

While Obama has a clear advantage given his incumbency, Romney does have a path to victory ? though it's a steep climb.

He must win most of the seven most competitive states ? Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia ? in order to reach the magic number. For instance, he can lose Ohio's 18 electoral votes and still become president if he wins the other six and hangs onto those already in his grasp. It's difficult to see a scenario where Romney wins without a victory in Florida, which offers 29 electoral votes.

Neither side expects a dramatically different playing field this fall.

"You know the states that are in play," said Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina. "I don't think there's going to be a surprise."

Romney's political director Rich Beeson makes the same point: "I don't think you're going to see the map go crazy."

Still, once their conventions are over, both campaigns will commission polls in the hardest-fought states to determine whether to shift their strategies. The candidates and their allied outside groups will pull money and manpower from states that are moving out of reach while relocating it to others they may now think they have a shot at winning.

"We're in a holding pattern," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican campaign strategist and informal adviser to Romney.

Perhaps not for long.

With a huge cash advantage, Romney is considering trying to put more states in play ? and creating more state-by-state paths to reach 270. He's closely watching to see whether it's worth it to compete aggressively in Wisconsin, now that native son Rep. Paul Ryan is on the ticket.

The Republican National Committee and GOP allies have been advertising in the state in hopes of making it competitive; at least one poll shows they've had some success and the race appears close. Obama, who has a formidable campaign on the ground that includes the state's active labor and minority blocs, hasn't advertised there but might be forced to do so.

Romney also is eyeing a deeper investment in Michigan, where he campaigned Friday, and Pennsylvania, where Ryan was last week. Obama carried both states in 2008, but the GOP sees promise in the economically struggling northern industrial states, especially among working-class, white voters.

The Republican may have the money to expand the map.

August financial reports show that Romney's overall fundraising apparatus ? his campaign, the RNC and a separate joint-fundraising committee ? had roughly $177 million in the bank at the end of July. The reports are the most recent public data.

And to a greater degree than Obama, Romney also has amassed an untapped stockpile of general election money that he plans to use this fall. He can begin spending it immediately upon accepting the nomination for president at the convention's close Thursday night.

Obama and his comparable committees, in turn, had only about $127 million on hand, according to the most recent report.

He also must wait until he accepts his party's nomination on Sept. 6, the close of the Democratic convention, to start spending his general election money.

Unlike Romney, Obama isn't focused on expanding the map in earnest.

He's mostly looking to hang onto as many of the states he won four years ago, with Ohio being of particular focus. In recent months, Obama's standing there has strengthened, the unemployment rate has dropped and last week General Motors announced a $200 million expansion of a northeast Ohio plant to continue building the Chevrolet Cruze there.

Beyond playing defense, Obama's team is watching to see whether the political terrain becomes more favorable to him in Missouri in the aftermath of controversial abortion and rape comments by Rep. Todd Akin, a GOP Senate candidate.

The backlash has been fierce, and polls show Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill ? arguably the most vulnerable Senate Democrat ? having gained ground. Obama competed for Missouri four years ago but lost and hasn't run ads there this year. Romney has had a comfortable advantage there.

If they have the money to do it, both sides will engage in head-faking: spending money in places simply to force the other side to defend their home turf. For example, if Romney goes after Pennsylvania, which has voted Democratic in all recent presidential elections, Obama would likely have to spend money to defend it, limiting the amount of cash he'll have available to spend in more competitive states, like Florida or Virginia.

Small Town Scrapbooker: Fun with "Family Circus"

When I was young, I ~loved~ reading comic strips in the local newspaper. I actually considered becoming a cartoon artist.? Hahahahaha!! ? I still have sketched of "Garfield" that I drew 25 years ago.

My small town local paper does not print comics. So, when traveling, I always make sure to check out the comics in their newspapers.

Here is a cute comic strip from "Family Circus" that I wanted to share... what do you think?

New Africa: how a bank executive became Nigeria's leading publisher

Muhtar Bakare

Publisher Muhtar Bakare in Lagos. Photograph: George Osodi/Panos

Muhtar Bakare believes in the quietest of revolutions. He thinks what we read can change us. He has lived and worked in Nigeria all his life and passionately believes everyone has the right to tell their own story.

His own is remarkable. He gave up his position as a bank executive to start an independent publishing house because no one was publishing fiction. Did people shake their heads over the brave folly of his enterprise? "Definitely! But setting up a publishing company was always going to be a challenge. And it still is: we have no distribution network and there is blatant piracy ? infringement of intellectual property. People have to struggle against this, which can inhibit the power to be productive."

But nothing seems to inhibit Bakare. He cites his voracious reading as a spur ? he studied architecture at university and was fascinated by politics and economics. This showed him the world was "ruled by ideas and I was concerned Nigerians were not contributing enough to their production". He became a banker because finance was "part of the way the world was structured" and he understood its influence. But he maintains that, even as he joined, he knew he would one day leave to become a publisher.

His wife still works in banking. They have two children. Did hisshe approve his career move? "I am lucky ? she is my soulmate. Her passion is for finance and she loves what she does. But she understands my need to follow my passion."

Bakare is no impractical idealist. Bakare has a capitalist vision: "Africa must participate in a global marketplace not as aid recipients but as producers on equal terms." It dismays him that "so many brilliant Africans are involved in aid rather than international trade".

In 2004, he started Farafina (a Bambara word that translates as "Africa") a highly regarded online magazine from which his company would grow. (Nowadays, he is managing director of Pearson Nigeria and he no longer runs Farafina, but is still a shareholder and director.) He made contact with writers including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who recently championed Bakare in the Guardian for his "humanist, widely read, pan-African" integrity. Purple Hibiscus, her first novel, was his company's first novel too.

He has also published African household names such as Biyi Bandele, Ben Okri and Ngugi wa Thiong'o and less well-known talents such as Segun Afolabi, Tanure Ojaide and Eghosa Imasuen.

Why is it so important for Nigerians to tell their stories? "The history of our country is short and turbulent" and because there are more than 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, the forging of a national identity is contentious. "They all struggle to be heard. Respect comes from understanding each other's stories. But we shout over each other and forget to listen. If we listened, we would find that what the other person was saying is an echo of what we are saying ourselves."

He believes Africa is often misunderstood outside the continent but adds: "Africa is also not well understood by Africans." His mission is to encourage empathy. He thinks Nigerian education tends to be slanted: "The story of the hunt is written by the hunter. We would feel differently if we heard the lion's side of the story." And would he publish it? "That is what I try to do," he says and laughs. But he is serious too.

Sim Shagaya of Konga.com, an e-commerce businessman who understands the way the world works, where it is going and is brave enough to engage it on its own terms.

Obama Campaign: 'America Doesn't Need a Birther-in-Chief'

The Obama campaign is branding Mitt Romney an aspiring "birther-in-chief," after the presumptive GOP nominee seemed to joke Friday about the long-debunked claim that President Obama was not born in the United States.

In a 15-second web video produced nine hours after Romney made the remark on a campaign stop in Michigan, Team Obama accused Romney of "embracing unfounded conspiracy theories, distracting from real issues."

"Holding out hope Romney had a vision for the middle class? Think again," the narrator said.

The spot included a clip of Romney speaking in Commerce, Mich., when he said:

"Now, I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital. No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," he said drawing laughter and applause. "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Romney later clarified in an interview with CBS News that the comment was "not a swipe" at the president and that he believes Obama was born in the U.S.A.

But that didn't stop the president's re-election campaign from seizing on the subtle reference, nonetheless.

"America doesn't need a birther-in-chief," the Obama Web spot concluded.

Stocks lower amid new economic data

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Stocks are lower in early trading Thursday, as overseas data point to a slowing global economy, while expectations were lowered for further stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

New claims for unemployment benefits took an unexpected jump in the latest week, raising more concerns about the struggling job market and providing further?incentive for the Federal Reserve to jump in and help the economy.

Before the open, the Labor Department reported that seasonally-adjusted initial claims rose 4,000 to 372,000. That's compared to a decline of 1,000 that economists on average had been expecting.

In other economic news, U.S. manufacturing improved slightly in August but hiring in the sector slowed and weak overseas demand for American goods kept the pace of overall growth subdued.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Ivan Dies At 50: A Gorilla Life, Remembered

John Bazemore/AP

Ivan chews on his finger in his exhibit at Zoo Atlanta in a 1996 file photo.

I've written before in this space about how an animal obituary may help mark a life of significance. Here is my obituary for Ivan the gorilla.

On Tuesday, Aug. 21, a 50-year life that began in the freedom of Africa, included a 27-year period of solitary confinement in a concrete cell in a U.S. shopping center, and drew to a close via relaxed naps under Zoo Atlanta's sunny sky, came to an end. One of the oldest gorillas in U.S. captivity, Ivan died following surgical assessment meant to discover why he was losing weight and feeling poorly.

Around 1962, Ivan and his twin sister were born in the African nation then known as Zaire (now the DRC, Democratic Republic of the Congo). When they were about 2, the youngsters were captured and sold by wildlife traders to a department store owner here in the U.S.

The sister died. Ivan lived as a pet until the inevitable happened, and he became too large to control. He was moved to the department store itself, in Tacoma, Wash. For the next 27 years, he lived on display, behind glass, in a 14 foot by 14 foot concrete cell. There, he smoked and ate hamburgers and lived utterly without ape companionship.

?

But times change, and collective action matters. More and more people began to grasp that this confinement of a highly social, smart ape wasn't right. Locally and nationally, people began to fight for Ivan. And finally, in 1995, they won.

At Zoo Atlanta in that year, Ivan walked on grass for the first time in decades. The Zoo hoped he'd come to enjoy living with other gorillas, and though they made sure he resided with females for many years, it was never an easy or completely enjoyable road for him. At worst, the females picked on him, and at best, Ivan and a female would live side-by-side but not interact much.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported before his death this week, Ivan was suffering from the aches and pains of an aging primate. He took Centrum vitamins and was given an easier-to-chew diet. He lived alone, but with visual contact with nearby gorillas.

Animal lovers will wish that Ivan had grown up to become a magnificent silverback in the DRC, head of his own group. Humans didn't allow that to happen. But after the terrible shopping-center period, Zoo Atlanta offered Ivan a life that could fairly be described as content. As the zoo's Ivan page shows via a timeline, photographs and a video clip, Ivan enjoyed his favorite routines, and the sun, sky and grass of his enclosure. He had close bonds with people at the zoo. That he lived alone near the end seems at first a terrible irony. But it's clear that all those years of emotional deprivation took their toll. He couldn't make the adjustment towards enjoying gorilla-gorilla interaction.

Ivan's story has touched thousands of people. He reminded us that even as we must face the "big" conservation and environmental problems with an ecosystem approach, we can't forget the individuals, each of whom has a story, a personality and a history.

Travel trusts: a new take on inheritance options in New Jersey ...

We have previously touched on the importance of trusts as a valuable estate planning device in New Jersey. Even with all of the financial difficulties encountered by the great recession and its aftermath, it is expected that the current generation will be in a position to transfer far greater wealth than prior ones. With that in mind, the notion of what constitutes an inheritance has become increasingly creative. One innovative idea focuses on travel trusts.

The idea behind a travel trust is often to expose those receiving an inheritance to cultural or religious influences. Family heritage also plays an important part in these types of bequests. A trust is created that provides funding for family vacations, reunions and even educational experiences. Because such a trust can be created with specific terms, it has potential tax benefits and can also be beyond the reach of creditors and divorce proceedings.

One Minneapolis travel firm has partnered with a local attorney to offer an estate planning opportunity for those interested in establishing a travel trust. One attorney noted that he has drafted travel trust documents for 10 clients over the past 15 years. He has also verbally passed on instructions to those receiving an inheritance or even an informal written document detailing the wishes of the person making the bequest.

Travel trusts are just one form of devising an inheritance that is both creative and serves a specific purpose. Doing so may give New Jersey beneficiaries the opportunity to travel and perhaps see a part of the world they would not otherwise have had the opportunity to visit. Those considering this type of trust as part of their overall estate plan may benefit from investigating the details and considering the usefulness in applying the trust to specific family circumstances.
