Glennon Melton: Putting My Kids To Bed: A Game Of Whack-A-Mole

I let Craig handle last night's round of "Whack-a- Mole" (bedtime) and settled into the couch at 7:45. It's like my victory lap -- that couch settling.

Day is done, gone the son, gone the girls and the the fights and the whiiiiines. All is calm -- Bravo ooooon -- sleep is nigh....

One of the myriad problems with this parenting gig is that they save the hardest part for last. BEDTIME. Bedtime should be in the morning -- when we're fresh and kind and sweet -- and decent parenting still seems like a very real possibility. But no, the hardest parts -- dinner and baths and bedtime -- arrive at the end of the day, when we have nothing left. When the truth is, we are counting the minutes. Counting the moments until no one is the boss of us anymore. Until we can sink into that couch, book, Internet, or glass of wine -- whatever our victory lap includes.

It doesn't help that in our mommy minds, we have this idea that bedtime is supposed to be the most peaceful, loving time of day. That we are supposed to send our lovies off to dream land with songs, stories, soft, sweet voices and strokes of their cherubic heads. Sometimes bedtime happens this way for us. Not often.

Each of our kids gets a story at bedtime. They never pick a good one, they pick the longest one.

And the little one wants to "help read" her book. So, let's see. It takes her about six minutes to sound out each word, and so if the book is one hundred words, well, I don't specialize in math but I am telling you that I am stuck in that room FOREVER. It feels like I will be reading that book with Amma until I die. And I know I'm supposed to be supporting her reading. I mean it's good -- this is good stuff, this wanting to read. I was a reading teacher, I know this is GOOD stuff about which I am supposed to be excited. But for me, exhaustion trumps excitement every single time. And I can't help but notice that the ONLY TIME SHE CARES THIS MUCH ABOUT READING IT HERSELF IS AT BEDTIME. When she can hold me hostage and stay up six minutes later with every sounded-out-word. And so while I'm supposed to be thinking sweet thoughts, all I can think is: OH MY GOD. I AM GOING TO DIE. JUST JUMP RIGHT OUT OF MY SKIN. YOU SUCK AT READING. YOU SUCK YOU SUCK YOU SUCK. PLEASE GOD. PLEASE MAKE THIS BOOK..just..just ...DISAPPEAR so I can take my victory lap. I DESERVE MY VICTORY LAP!

But No. Nope. No help from above. So it goes on. And on. "S....o.......soooooooooo t-h- e....tuuuuu---huuuuuu---eeeeeeeeee?" says Amma. I am held hostage for 45 minutes. When she is finally done. I decide that after that debacle there is NO WAY that the universe also expects me to sing the "song" that is also part of her "bedtime routine." I say goodnight and pray she'll forget.

But they never forget. They pretend to forget ONLY so that they have another excuse to pop out of their rooms and remind you of what you forgot.

So three minutes later, when I think I'm in the clear, here comes my littlest mole. "You forgot my song," she says. And I stare at her for a long second and admit to myself two things.

1. She is unbelievably cute and precious and one day I will miss these visits, especially when she starts sneaking out of her room to party with her friends instead of to find me to sing to her.

2. Doesn't matter. I'm going to lose it.

And so I sing her song. But I sing it like an insane person. Eyes wide, teeth clenched, just a little too loud. No sweetness. Like a robot. "You. Are. My. Sun. SHINE. My. Only. Sun. SHINE." I sing it like there are implied curse words between every lyric.

She gets it. She finally goes to sleep. They know when mommy's done. It's not pretty, but it's effective. And often that's the best I can do.

So last night as I waited for Craig to whack the last mole -- I half listened to the bedroom doors re-open and the typical mole-y excuses -- "I can't sleep because my elbow hurts!" "I need ICE COLD water, not reg-a-lar water" "My closet doors are open." "There's an elephant shadow on my window." Whack- Whack-Whack- Whack. Nothing new. The moles are not too creative tonight, I thought. But then, I hear a door open and one appears to say to poor Craig- mallet in hand -- sitting against the wall in the hallway -- "I can't sleep because my finger smells because I keep scratching my bottom."

Hmm. Not bad, I thought, and I giggled, because it's funny when it's not your turn. Craig says, "Okay. Go wash your hand." I hear the water run, hallway waddling, child returns to her room. Two minutes later, door re-opens, child-mole re-appears. "My finger still...." "GO WASH YOUR HAND AGAIN," Craig says with that very even, controlled tone that indicates the Whack -a-Mole machine is about to BUST. Water starts, child- mole slowly creeps back to her room. A minute later, door re-opens. Mole child says, "My finger still..." THEN STOP SCRATCHING YOUR BUTT. AND STOP SMELLING YOUR FINGER! OR PUT IT UNDER YOUR PILLOW. HOLD YOUR BREATH. WHATEVER IT TAKES. JUST GO. TO. SLEEP!

Mole child gets it. She is out of quarters. Daddy's broke. Machine is done for the day.

No more doors open.

Craig comes downstairs.

He joins me with tea and "Mad Men" for our victory lap. He's asleep within 10 minutes.

5 Timeless Ways to Find Happiness - Inspirational Spark

It took me quite a long time to figure out what I truly wanted in life. I used to blindly chase after material things hoping they would fill the void in my life, but they never did. So I pursued them with even more persistence but still I would never taste that satisfaction from gaining them.

Then one day after another unsatisfactory material gain it hit me.

Even if I gained all the wealth in the world what did it really give me?

This question radically changed my life and it made me look at the big picture. The only reason I pursued the flashy cars and big mansions was because I craved happiness. I felt that through this material gain I would find happiness and satisfy this hole in my life, but material things were never enough. This change in perspective led me to discover and pursue those things that really did give me happiness. I hope to share with you what I learnt so that you and everybody else still finding their purpose in life can find true happiness.

1.??????Cherish Your Family and Friends

You must realize that the root of happiness is love, and where is the deepest love found in your life? Well it's not in your business or your job; it's between you and the people who are closest to you, your family and friends.

Therefore try to cherish your?relationships?and understand that this is where true happiness will flower from. Come to terms with your life and discover what is truly important to you.

2.??????Gratitude

I know for me this strategy was the most important.

Gratitude is the simple act of being thankful for something. Try to be thankful for all that you have as much as possible. This positivity puts you in the correct mindset and when you realize that you have so much to be thankful for your happiness is guaranteed to go up.

Try to count your blessings throughout the day.

3.??????Be In the Present

Most people don't find happiness because they are either stuck in the past or are looking too far into the future. This wrong perspective only increases their?stress and anxiety?and it never allows people to focus on today. Mind

Take life one day at a time and be here. This will make you feel more in control because you will have the power to change and this attitude will help you find happiness and it will bring freshness into your life.

4.??????Show Compassion and Kindness

I can't completely explain the sensation you feel when you give or receive kindness but what I can tell you is that a huge portion of that sensation is happiness.

That's why you should always practice kindness and compassion in every aspect of your life. Through?persistence?this practice will become second nature and you will see incredible results. You will find that not only will you feel happier but the people around you will be happier with you.

5.??????Follow your Heart

Your heart will always tell you what you truly desire. Listen to your hearts advice and do what you feel is the most important. Don't let your mind get in the way and you will find that your heart will lead you right towards happiness.

Presentation Tips for Business Pitches and Interviews ...

Strategy Plan One

May 30, 2012?

Whether you are going into a business meeting, interview for job, or to pitch an idea to an investor or financial institution, there are certain tactics that could push your presentation from mediocre to brilliant. ?It?s not necessarily the gadgets, techie presentation tools you bring along to illustrate your points, but rather how you present and what you do in the presentation to convince the crowd. ?Here are some tips to assist in your presentations.

Ensure you are well versed in the subject matter. ?If you are pitching an idea in an industry, know that product, industry and markets inside and out. ?Conducting deep research and digging into as much information prior is going to make you look like you know your stuff? and that will impress the audience

If you are going into an interview, know the information around the position, company, and industry. ?Chances are you will be slammed with knowledge questions in the interview and your presentation of answers should demonstrate your deep knowledge in the subject matter.

Oral presentation can be stressful, and that stress can cause some to ramble on with too much speech, or technical babble that would throw off the audience. ?Going into a meeting well prepared through practicing your presentation, ensure you get your message right down to the exact clear points to the audience. ?Speak with clarity on the topic, illustrating the benefits you want and need to present, that would be relevant to the audience. ?Keep the non-relevant stuff off the discussion. ?As you remember who your audience is, keep the technical or operational specialist information to a minimum if the audience isn?t at that technical level. ?If technical questions are asked, then it opens the door for that detailed discussion.

You will need to exude a high level of confidence in front of the Boards, partners, or employers. ?Confidence is high when you know your stuff, have a great track record, know that your personality is right fit. ?With high confidence you should not?be sheepish in promoting yourself, your strengths and your great ideas. ?External interested parties gravitate to persons with a high level of confidence as that will transfer over to other aspects of business life. ?Once parties are confident in you, they will be confident in your ability to lead projects, lead organizations, achieve goals and company?objectives.

Interviews and business meetings are pressured, stressful situations. ?These parties may use interviews or business presentations as?a tools to see how well you react under pressure. ?Business presentations and interviews can be full of questioning that is trying to draw out behavioral responses from you. ?It is best to stay strong and composed to adequately answer questioning. ?In staying composed in the stressful situations, you are limiting those emotions that may alter or hinder your ability to make decisions or achieve a goal under pressure. ?Parties will take positive notes on your ability to handle high pressured situations with ease.

As you move forward in your discussions and presentations, gauge your audience. How well is it going? ?Don?t be afraid to stop at points and ask the questions, ?Was that point clear?? or ?Is further discussion or detail required on that point??. ?As an astute presenter and speaker you may need to revise your speech, your presentation methods on the fly to get a differing response or to motivate the crowd in another way. ?If you are getting negative responses in one area or topic, switch gears to adapt to discuss the constructive positive points or benefits, or have the ability to discuss the alternate pathways to mitigate those negative points.

Along with having a solid knowledge base and that strong confidence level, you will need to show how well prepared you are for situations, and how well you plan. ?For interviews or business presentations, you need to undertake a high level of preparation in advance. ?Thinking along the lines of business scenarios that may arise. ?Not only must you prepare for the known circumstances, but you must be a pro-active planner around the unknowns or the what-ifs. ?Demonstrating that you solidly analyze scenarios and develop action plans and contingencies will win you big bonus points.

liberation: NZ Politics Daily: 29 May

At each stage of the ?baby boomer? life cycle the decisions benefitting them have always been pushed as ?what was best (and necessary) for the country as a whole. And so it is now. The current pressure on National to agree to raise the age of eligibility for superannuation is perversely pushed as being necessary to remedy ?intergenerational unfairness? ? see, for example, Grant Miller?s?Doing nothing about super. It?s exactly the opposite in many ways but that shouldn?t come as a surprise to anyone who has tracked the fortunes of this ?lucky generation?.

?

If you were born in the 1950s you would have grown up as New Zealand?s economy boomed, with almost zero unemployment. If your family couldn?t afford a decent private rental there were literally entire suburbs of state houses built and available at low rent. These were not the multi-story blocks that later tenants had to endure, but roomy, well-built (and now much sought after) houses with quarter acre sections. If you wanted to own your own house but didn?t have the deposit then your universal family benefit could be capitalised and there were subsidised housing corporation loans to make sure the mortgage payment weren?t too onerous. Most health and education services were, for all intents and purposes, free. School donations were actually donations ? not invoiced with threats of exclusion if not paid.? Tertiary education required almost no fees and living allowances were easily accessible, along with plentiful holiday employment.

2 kiwisaver NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Of course the top marginal tax rate was 66% in order to pay for all these benefits. But in the late 80s, just as middle class baby boomers entered their high earning years, the top tax rate was halved. That meant the next generation had to start paying and borrowing for their education, along with market rentals for state house tenants and numerous other user-pays charges.

?

A new generation of graduates already saddled with mortgage sized debt wasn?t really a problem. They were told the need to own your own home was irrational and there were plenty of houses they could rent from the well-off baby boomers, who were furiously investing their surplus income in property, claiming deductions but still free of any tax on their substantial capital gains. House prices rocketed ? which was great for growing untaxed wealth, but was a disaster for families trying to buy their first home.

?

Baby boomers who joined Kiwsaver early will have received the highest proportion of Government subsidy for their savings ? the state?s generosity is already being ratcheted down. Kiwisaver funds will be the icing on the cake for baby boomers, but is likely to be the main staple for those that follow with auto-enrolment already planned and compulsion being mooted by Labour (see: Alex Tarrant?s?Labour considers not letting KiwiSaver savings out of NZ). John Armstrong certainly sees the writing on the wall: ?it might survive as a vital back-stop for those unable to save for their retirement if the bulk of workers can draw their retirement incomes from elsewhere. It stands to reason that the more workers there are with KiwiSaver schemes, the less the future pressure on the existing state scheme? ? see:?Shift that would turn Key into a superman.

? 2 super 65 67 labour NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Paper boys and girls are having their taxes increased to save a few million and childcare subsidies are being reduced, but huge sums are still flowing to the ?lucky generation? each year. The government apparently had no choice but to fork out $1.6 billion to save (overwhelmingly older) finance company investors who chased a few extra dollars in return for much higher risk. Treasury had kindly underwritten these risks and, as usual, the boomer?s well-being was deemed essential to all taxpayers.

?

Particularly hard hit will be Maori, Pacific people and those on low incomes whose relative life expectancy worsened in the 80s and 90s, a gap which has never been made up (see: Otago University?s?Unequal playing fields). The number of years they will be able to securely retire will be dramatically cut ? many Maori and Pacific males will never see a pension. Raising the retirement age is not only an intergenerational transfer of wealth ? it is effectively a massive shift in public benefits to middle and high income pakeha retirees.?

?

We shouldn?t be surprised that the ever-increasing health spend goes largely unquestioned and attempts to direct it to more cost-effective prevention rather than treatment continue to be resisted. We can probably look forward in a few years to greater government regulation and subsidies for funeral services ? those customised Harley Davidson hearses don?t come cheap.

?

Raising the age of entitlement to superannuation is presented as the only option. It is apparently unthinkable that we should ask the most well-off of a generation to contribute back some of the wealth they have accumulated (thanks to their dream run through the welfare state) so that their children can at least retire with the same security as the ?lucky generation?.?

?

Luck, as they say, has nothing to do with it.

Engineered microvessels provide a 3-D test bed for human diseases

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Mice and monkeys don't develop diseases in the same way that humans do. Nevertheless, after medical researchers have studied human cells in a Petri dish, they have little choice but to move on to study mice and primates.

University of Washington bioengineers have developed the first structure to grow small human blood vessels, creating a 3-D test bed that offers a better way to study disease, test drugs and perhaps someday grow human tissues for transplant.

The findings are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"In clinical research you just draw a blood sample," said first author Ying Zheng, a UW research assistant professor of bioengineering. "But with this, we can really dissect what happens at the interface between the blood and the tissue. We can start to look at how these diseases start to progress and develop efficient therapies."

Zheng first built the structure out of the body's most abundant protein, collagen, while working as a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University. She created tiny channels and injected this honeycomb with human endothelial cells, which line human blood vessels.

During a period of two weeks, the endothelial cells grew throughout the structure and formed tubes through the mold's rectangular channels, just as they do in the human body.

When brain cells were injected into the surrounding gel, the cells released chemicals that prompted the engineered vessels to sprout new branches, extending the network. A similar system could supply blood to engineered tissue before transplant into the body.

After joining the UW last year, Zheng collaborated with the Puget Sound Blood Center to see how this research platform would work to transport real blood.

The engineered vessels could transport human blood smoothly, even around corners. And when treated with an inflammatory compound the vessels developed clots, similar to what real vessels do when they become inflamed.

The system also shows promise as a model for tumor progression. Cancer begins as a hard tumor but secretes chemicals that cause nearby vessels to bulge and then sprout. Eventually tumor cells use these blood vessels to penetrate the bloodstream and colonize new parts of the body.

When the researchers added to their system a signaling protein for vessel growth that's overabundant in cancer and other diseases, new blood vessels sprouted from the originals. These new vessels were leaky, just as they are in human cancers.

"With this system we can dissect out each component or we can put them together to look at a complex problem. That's a nice thing -- we can isolate the biophysical, biochemical or cellular components. How do endothelial cells respond to blood flow or to different chemicals, how do the endothelial cells interact with their surroundings, and how do these interactions affect the vessels' barrier function? We have a lot of degrees of freedom," Zheng said.

The system could also be used to study malaria, which becomes fatal when diseased blood cells stick to the vessel walls and block small openings, cutting off blood supply to the brain, placenta or other vital organs.

"I think this is a tremendous system for studying how blood clots form on vessels walls, how the vessel responds to shear stress and other mechanical and chemical factors, and for studying the many diseases that affect small blood vessels," said co-author Dr. Jos? L?pez, a professor of biochemistry and hematology at UW Medicine and chief scientific officer at the Puget Sound Blood Center.

Future work will use the system to further explore blood vessel interactions that involve inflammation and clotting. Zheng is also pursuing tissue engineering as a member of the UW's Center for Cardiovascular Biology and the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine.

Other co-authors are UW physics senior Samuel Totorica; Abraham Stroock, Michael Craven, Nak Won Choi, Michael Craven, Anthony Diaz-Santana and Claudia Fischbach at Cornell; Junmei Chen at the Puget Sound Blood Center; and Barbara Hempstead at Weill Cornell Medical College.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Human Frontier Science Program and Cornell University. ###

Beryl continues advance toward Northeast Florida, Georgia

11 a.m.: National Hurricane Center: Beryl strengthens

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows Beryl gaining strength, with sustained winds at 60 mph. The storm is located 125 miles to the east of Jacksonville and moving west at 10 mph. Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the coast late this morning or early afternoon. Landfall is expected this evening. Rain totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible.

8:45 a.m.: Mayor asks residents to take caution, prepare for storm

At a morning news conference at the city's Emergency Operations Center, Mayor Alvin Brown encouraged residents to take caution and prepare for subtropical storm Beryl.

"I am encouraging all area residents to stay indoors and off the streets as the storm approaches,? Brown said. "And please do not go into the water today. Stay out of the water ??it's about safety."

Brown also encouraged business owners to close early today to allow employees to get home safely and prepare for the storm.

No mandatory evacuations have been issued, he said.

Residents should prepare, however, for localized flooding, downed trees and downed power lines. "Don't become compacent; take this very seriously," he stressed.

An emergency shelter for those with special needs will open at noon today at the Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Drive near Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

He said that he expects garbage pick-up on Monday will be halted.

At this time, there are not plans to close Jacksonville International Airport and there are no bridge closures, he said. Updates on the Jacksonville Port Authority are forthcoming.

Additionally, the mayor said he signed a declaration of emergency, paving the way for federal assistance if needed.

Updates on the city's official Memorial Day activities are expected later this morning.

For more information, residents can call 630-2489 (630-CITY) or visit jaxready.org.

Our earlier story:

Subtropical storm Beryl is churning ever closer to the Southeast U.S. coast, threatening Memorial Day beachgoers with dangerous surf and drenching rains from Northeast Florida to the Carolinas.

The National Hurricane Center said Beryl was centered at 8 a.m. about 165 miles east of Jacksonvile. Forecasters said the system has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving west-southwest at 10 mph.

In advance of the storm, the City of Jacksonville and Mayor Alvin Brown have canceled today's Jacksonville Jazz Festival activities with the sole exception of the jazz brunch event at downtown's Omni Hotel.

With dangerous rip currents present, the city also has closed the beaches for swimming.

The city will open a special-needs shelter at the Legends Center at Soutel and Moncrief in Northwest Jacksonville at noon. Anyone electricity- and oxygen-dependent should use this shelter if there are power outages or flooding.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Northeast Florida, stretching from south of St. Augustine northward along the coasts of Georgia and parts of South Carolina. The Miami-based hurricane center says the storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or early Monday.

Beryl is technically considered a "subtropical storm," its thunderstorms capable of generating dangerous surf and rains of up to 3 to 6 inches.

Bond issue: $190 million would cover new parks, upgrades in El ...

If approved by voters in November, about 40 percent of the $468 million quality-of-life bond issue will be used to build new parks and recreation centers and to improve existing ones, city officials said.

Among the top-dollar projects on the parks and recreation list are a new regional park for the far East Side; a soccer complex with up to 12 fields in an area to be determined later; two 50-meter competition pools on the East and West sides; two combination recreation centers and libraries in South Central and the Lower Valley; and a new recreation center in the Lower Valley.

Overall, about $190 million is targeted for parks, swimming pools and recreation centers.

"I'm glad that much of it is going to parks," said East Side resident Jesus Cordero, an avid parkgoer who coaches youth soccer and T-ball. "We can always use more parks and fields and centers that keep our young ones active."

El Paso's city parks system ranked 26th among the 40th largest U.S. cities, according to a recent study by the Trust for Public Land. The organization's ParkScore system rates cities on a scale of zero to five, and El Paso earned a two rating based on park access, size and services and investment. The city ranked fifth when it came to park space, but accessibility was a concern, the organization reported last week.

"I think the best investment we can make is in ourselves," city Rep. Cortney Niland said. "I'm really excited about this bond and our future."

The proposal

The

City Council on Thursday approved the project list for the bond referendum. It includes the $190 million for parks and recreation facilities, $50 million for the zoo, $12 million for libraries, $36 million for museums and $180 million for a multipurpose sports and entertainment center.

The allocation of bond money for parks became a point of contention during Thursday's special council meeting, as city representatives advocated for projects for their districts.

In the end, representatives unanimously approved the parks and recreation projects, which will be presented to voters under one proposal to include all parks, recreation and amateur sports facilities such as soccer complexes and the competition pools.

A second proposal will group cultural and entertainment facilities such as libraries, museums and the multipurpose sports and entertainment center, into one category for voter approval.

A third proposal will ask for a 2 percent increase in the hotel occupancy tax to help support a venue for a possible Triple-A baseball team. If a team is secured for El Paso, the stadium would likely be a partnership between the city and the private sector.

The final projects will be included in a resolution to be approved by the City Council later this summer. The resolution will officially call for the bond election.

If you build it ...

It's estimated that about $15 million would go to plan, design and build the first phase of the East Side regional park at the old Hueco Golf Course off Montana Avenue east of Loop 375. The park would include soccer and baseball fields, a skate park, a dog park, a playground and an amphitheater. Much of the land in the desert area was deeded to the city by Douglas Schwartz of Southwest Land Development Services about 10 years ago.

A recreation center is also planned for the East Side regional park, as well as one of the two 50-meter competition pools. A second pool would be built at the Don Haskins Recreation Center on the West Side.

The proposed $10 million soccer complex would have eight to 12 fields, including a championship field for large tournaments. A site hasn't been determined, city officials said.

Also allotted are three new recreation centers at a cost of about $12 million each. Two of the centers would be combined with libraries -- one in the Chamizal neighborhood near Bowie High School, and another along Alameda Avenue near Riverside High School. The third recreation center would be built at either Yucca or Lomaland Park in the Bel Air High School area.

Among other projects in the $190 million parks and recreation bond allotment:

  • Phase two of the Northeast regional park, including a dog park, skate park and lighted flat fields.
  • Phase four of the West Side community park, including volleyball and tennis courts.
  • Phase two of the O'Rourke Recreation Center in Central, including new racquetball courts.
  • Expansion of the Grandview Senior Center in Central into a multipurpose center, including the addition of a gym.
  • Expansion of the Veterans and Nolan Richardson rec centers in Northeast.
  • Enclosing the Pavo Real swimming pool in the Lower Valley.

San Jacinto Plaza would get about $3 million in renovations, and an additional $5 million would be allotted for walking trails and small parking areas along some of the city's canyons and other open spaces.

About $5 million would go toward shade canopies to cover playgrounds, modular play structures and swings and lighting for outdoor sports fields at parks citywide.

Avoid Home Improvement Pitfalls With These Tips

Add shutters to the outside windows on your home for a dramatic change in architecture. If your exterior looks a bit drab or flat, you can use this simple tip to give it much more depth and interest. Paint them a coordinating color to your house, often the color of the front door.

New floor covering is a great way to update the look and feel of any room in your house. A reputable flooring company can install new hardwood, carpet, laminate or tile flooring in as little as one day or visit your local home improvement store for do it yourself options.

If part of your home improvement entails repainting a door, there are two methods you may utilize to do this. Sometimes, the easiest way to paint a door is to remove it from its hinges and paint it on sawhorses which have been placed on a drop cloth. You can also choose not to remove the door and just paint it in place over a drop cloth. Use a high-quality paint brush and brush in line with the wood?s grain.

If you are looking to create a sense of tranquility in your rooms, choose light as air colors such as light purple, light green or light blue. Use linen and cotton fabric instead of heavy patterns and dark brocades. Place some potpourri on your coffee table and light a scented candle to create your own piece of tranquil heaven.

Painting home improvement projects require dry days. This tip is critical for having success in painting your home. On wet and humid afternoons, paint dries more slowly on the walls, which means that you will be at your project longer. Only painting on the dry days will cut your time in between coats and speed up the project overall.

As you begin your home improvement project, make sure that you don?t underestimate how much work will be involved. Sit down and make a list of everything you have to do. It is also valuable to get a second opinion in case you missed something during your assessment. You will save money if you have a clear picture of everything that needs to be done.

Put a skirt on your bathroom sink! Tired of seeing those tired old pipes every time you go into your bathroom? Buy a pretty piece of fabric from the sewing center, cut it to size, and hem around all four edges. Run a cord through the top hem and gather the curtain so it hangs daintily in place.

As was stated in this article, home improvement projects can be stressful for some people. However, if you have the right advice and information, it becomes much easier to do a home improvement project very well. Use this article?s advice, and be on your way to a successful home improvement project.

Morgan Stanley to Refund Facebook IPO Investors Who Overpaid

    Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley is prepared to refund retail Facebook IPO investors who purchased company stock last Friday, a source familiar with the matter told USA Today. The lead investment bank in Facebook?s initial public offering plans to compensate investors who reportedly overpaid.

Facebook IPO Investors Suffer Major Losses

Investors were excited about purchasing stock on Facebook IPO day, but were quickly disappointed to learn that trading was stalled by 30 minutes as a result of technical problems on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

As a result of the major glitch, investors complained that their orders were never processed correctly, which resulted in losses. Some larger market makers say their losses have?reached as high as?$100 million.

Additionally, Facebook and Morgan Stanley are facing lawsuits after the IPO fiasco. Investors alleged that analysts at the large underwriting investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO, but told?only a handful of clients.

    Morgan Stanley to?Compensate Individual Investors

While Morgan Stanley has declined to comment about the lawsuits it faces,?it plans to compensate its retail investors, also known as individual investors, who paid too much on Facebook IPO day.

The source who shared the company?s plans said the firm is reviewing the orders its individual clients placed for Facebook stock, and will make price adjustments if the clients paid too much.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity since they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, was unsure of what amount constituted overpayment. However, an investor shared that they?d placed an order at 8 a.m. on May 18 but didn?t receive confirmation of that trade until Monday (May 21) when the price was much higher than the opening bell.

Facebook stock, which fell flat on IPO day by closing?at $38.23 per share, has not experienced impressive results. On Friday morning, the stock was down 15 percent from the price of its initial public offering a week prior, trading at just $32.57 per share.

The Internet Media in Business | Walter Finance and Investment

It has always been important for the realization of any person having a social environment in which being accepted, allows you to interact and communicate with each of its members. With the advent of Web 2.0 the way we communicate and the transformation of the social environment have been radical.

    INTERNET

Without the emergence of the Internet as a new medium, would not have been possible to create the tools and the necessary channel so they could develop social settings among people who are born and develop every day in social networks.

But online communication has not always been so, the first Internet communication between two people was through an email, then came the forums, which addressed issues related to a specific topic, but communication was not in real time and this prevented the possibility of generating effective communication. By then there were the Chats, who can not remember where you walked in IRC-related halls thematic or social affinities, MSN Messenger, ICQ and other messaging programs that allowed us the opportunity to have a means of real-time communication but with many limitations, since none of these communication channels and other I did not add, by its limitations prevented us from creating and participating in social settings at all levels.

    SOCIAL NETWORKS

Social networks have allowed us to take advantage of the possibilities offered by Internet to communicate breaking down physical barriers, can participate and create dynamic social environments, with groups of people did not know of them from childhood or relate to others that are in the other the world. This new dimension of the social, created through the social networking sites, is bringing a revolution in the world of communication.

It is clear that the success of social networks is the possibility they have had to seamlessly integrate social environments. This is the fundamental basis on which social media tour.

    THE?SOCIAL MEDIA AND BUSINESS

We are witnessing a true boom, we have a Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.. Even in the soup! They have such a role, many professional media and social media have become the axis around which you must turn online marketing. They keep out Gurus who preach from the rooftops that all companies must be whether or social networks, if not, their businesses do not exist on the Internet. I think these are crap as a temple words are too strong and radical. I say that the companies if they are not social networks may not exercise complete control and immediate communication of the influence of your Product / Brand, but will have presence on the Internet and much, provided they have a professional corporate web (real and only the cornerstone on which he has turned and turn today?s online marketing companies).

As in any niche market that suddenly becomes popular and generated a huge buzz, there?s a lot opportunist who takes the car and we just sold the bike to make a killing, we must be careful and distinguish the professionals with years of experience in this sector and evolve with it, and the opportunists that have appeared from nowhere and we can waste time and money.

So the Social Media is not essential for business? What the companies whose customers to other companies, may be interested really have a presence on social networks? To find answer to these questions and others, which we must be clear, is that you have to know what options and opportunities we can offer social networks and know how to exploit them.

    OPPORTUNITIES THAT PROVIDE SOCIAL NETWORKS

A few years working in a company, some colleagues find that in some forums a topic related to our products, customers and potential were talking about our products, including asking them their opinion potential customers who had purchased these products were created thread in the forums that sometimes he spoke well and others spoke ill. By the company decided to attempt to participate in the forums thread, the attempt was a failure, basically because we were unable to create the right customer communication environment-brand, over time I realized that part of the fault had the medium (a forum) did not allow us to create a true social media environment.

Today the companies have the ability to interact with the social environments in which you can find our potential, more so the most interesting and positive is that the brand can create social environments in which this invitation to come to their clients and potential, offering the possibility of being members of a wealth of communication between the client-label-products.

If we create this climate of communication, we can get on social networks more likely to promote our products and services with a higher return than any other advertising medium. The climax for a company with a presence in social networks, is when the users get to talk about you positively and you sell to other users, the best communicator of a brand, not a big Comunity Manager is a truly satisfied customer , have this very clear.

    THE VALUE OF FOLLOWERS

Let me make clear that social networks, brands have to interact intelligently with their followers, because if not, that can happen is that one day hauls a thousand gazillion ask your followers and do not answer anyone. This happens by the following. If aporias not enough value to your followers, they will forget you and only you will ignore. Imagine on twitter, if you throw a message when a fan is not reading your time line, this is not going to read and most importantly, if you are not important to him, nor will you added to a list so I can read later carefully, the message is hopelessly lost in the depths of your time line. In social networks not only have to get followers, if not to become an influential brand or reference. The followers must be willing to hear from us, we must be able to generate buzz.

All this work on social media takes time, not come and kiss the saint, not Sergio Ramos are all like that aside from having a community of 1,792,328 ?Like? on Facebook and other community of 2,290,921 of Twitter followers in most of such member of his community are expectant to your comments.

On this subject I want to make clear, is that firms in social networks first thing you have to do is listen, then gradually participate in the talks. Brands can not be posting links to other news and communicating in one direction and that is that many brands still do not know how to participate in social networks, the secret is to be able to create a social environment of communication, in which Mark speaks with his followers. Anyway this is an entirely new environment, much remains to be done and much to learn.

RETURN OF SOCIAL NETWORKS FOR BUSINESS

To give you an idea, doing great work, the return on social networks for a brand from scratch is not known, is at least after six months or a year?s work. If you get a return in a shorter period, without knowing neither God ? Put yourself in the hands of a great professional in the field, creating the best content ever seen, and viral?zate as a pest in social networks, yet I wish you luck.

    CONCLUSIONS

Is it worth being in social networks with the great effort involved? At first I say yes, because today there is no other channel can offer you a better chance of promotion and projection to a very low cost. But before starting, an expert in Online Marketing, repeat an expert in Online Marketing, you have to do some research and plan a campaign, in which the Comunity Manager will set the work to be performed when the leading brand communication in social networks.

Anyway you have to prioritize needs in businesses, marketers of these generators of business, have to decide whether to bet on social media or even not the time, so if you made clear is that business sectors is that if your target audience is the end, I recommend that should be in social networks to create social environments of communication, contact, talk to your potential, position your company as a leader in your industry with a blog and share your post on social networks in which you face.

If your target are companies, your presence in social networks is not so important but if advisable, consider making the leap And if you have time and an online marketing professional can advise you and guide.
