Latest Polls Show Uptick for Obama in Key Swing States; Gallup Still Down After Superstorm Sandy

The presidential race heads to the finish with 15 new polls today at the time of this writing. President Barack Obama led in 12 of them, including two in the battleground state of Ohio. Not to be outdone, Governor Mitt Romney split Florida and Virginia with Obama. The candidates split the two national polls released today as well.

Florida

Each candidate can lay claim to a lead in Florida today. A new Gravis Marketing poll gave Romney the edge over Obama, 50-47 percent. The poll surveyed 549 likely voters with a 4.2 percent margin of error. A CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac poll found Obama ahead, 48-47 percent. The poll of 1,073 likely voters had only a 3 percent margin of error. Romney has fared better in Florida for the last month, leading in all but six polls in October. But three of those polls were within the last week, indicating a tight race.

Ohio

Obama led in both new pols of Ohio released today. A CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac poll found Obama with a five-point lead, 50-45 percent. The poll of 1,110 likely voters had a 3 percent margin of error. A poll by the University of Cincinnati also put the president ahead, 48-46 percent. Their survey of 1,182 likely voters had a 2.9 percent margin of error. Obama has only trailed in four polls of Ohio this month, and tied Romney in four others.

Virginia

The candidates split the Old Dominion in two new polls. The third CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac poll of the day found Obama up by two points, 49-47 percent. The poll surveyed 1,074 likely voters with a 3 percent margin of error. A poll conducted by Roanoke College found Romney ahead by five points, 49-44 percent. The poll of 638 likely voters had a margin of error of 4 percent. Virginia, like Florida, may be getting closer as the campaigns race to the finish. Romney has led in most polls of Virginia in October, but his average lead, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average, is down to merely 0.5 percent. The average is computed from polls conducted in the previous two weeks. Only the most recent poll by the same pollster is considered.

Michigan

Obama continues to lead in Michigan, as he has consistently since August. The latest poll by the Detroit News found Obama with a three point advantage, 48-45 percent. The poll surveyed 600 likely voters with a 4 percent margin of error. The race here may be tightening as well, as the next most recent poll showed the candidates tied.

National Polls

Only two national polls were published today, while a third updated their situation in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The Rasmussen Three Day Tracking Poll continued to show Romney in the lead, 49-47 percent. A snapshot poll conducted by the National Journal found Obama ahead by five points, 50-45 percent. Gallup announced via its website that it was suspending normal polling operations for another night "due to the ongoing effects of Superstorm Sandy." Gallup will continue to reassess their decision on a daily basis, and will provide another update on Wednesday.
