Newton school district again on NCLB in need of assistance list ...

By PETER HUSSMANN

The Newton Community School District is one of?28 districts across the state that were identified as a district in need of assistance for the current school year under the federal No Child Left Behind guidelines.

The Iowa Department of Education today released its 2012 State Report Card for No Child Left Behind. The results show that?28 of 351 (8.0 percent) public school districts were identified as in need of assistance. Thirty school districts were identified as needing assistance last school year.

The designation marks the?fourth consecutive year that the Newton district has been identified as not meeting its annual state participation goals or measurable objectives.

In addition, the report shows a total of the 1,381 Iowa public schools that provided services to students in grades K to 12 for which progress decisions were made, a total of 496 public schools (35.9 percent)were identified as schools in need of assistance. This is an increase of 6.3 percent from the 29.6 percent of public schools identified in need of assistance last school year.

Two years ago, 7.5 perccent of Iowa school districts were on the in need of assistance list and 24.9 percent of the state's schools.

Three Newton schools - Newton Senior High School, Basics and Beyond alternerative high school, and Berg Middle School - remained on the list from last year, with Aurora Heights being added as a school in need of assistance this year.

The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires public schools and districts to meet Adequate Yearly Progress targets for overall student population and for demographic subgroups in grades 3-8 and grade 11. These subgroups include socio-economic status, limited English proficiency, race/ethnicity and special education.

Schools must meet all targets in every student group to meet its progress requirement and must test 95 percent of students in each group. Average daily attendance and high school graduation rates are other academic factors considered.

The legislation also includes yearly target increases schools must meet in order to meet the long-range goal of having 100 percent of students meet grade-level standards in reading and mathematics by 2014. The targets for the past school year, however, did not increase in Iowa because the state requested and received a one-year freeze in June, shortly after the U.S. Department of Education turned down Iowa's application for a waiver from certain requirements of the federal legislation. The targets would have increased by about 7 percent had Iowa request been denied and resulted in even a?higher number of schools and districts missing progress goals.

The results, however, were linked to higher expectations set by the Iowa Core standards, the state's roadmap of what students should learn in school. A new version of the state assessment taken by students last school year was more challenging.

"Student achievement will be stronger in the long run as our state assessments evolve to match our standards, which have been raised to better prepare students for the demands of our globally competitive marketplace," said Jason Glass, director of the Iowa Department of Education.

Glass still contends that the No Child Left Behind Act holds schools to unrealistic measures and then labels those that fall short as failing. He said the Iowa Department of Education will continue to seek permanent relief from the law.

"We expect our schools to meet high standards, but we need an approach that focuses on student growth and progress in addition to proficiency on tests," he said. "Either reauthorization of No Child Left Behind must become a priority at the federal level, or our state legislature must give Iowa the ability to receive a federal waiver from No Child Left Behind, which would allow us to develop a rigorous accountability system that makes sense for our state."

The 2012 State Report Card can be found here.?The stages of in need of assistance status timelines for schools and school districts can be found here.

The Colfax-Mingo Middle School is the only other school in Jasper County appearing on the assistance lists.

Ubuntu 13.04's final release slated for April, alpha to arrive in December

Quantal Quetzal won't properly launch until October 18th, but a tentative timeline for Ubuntu 13.04 has already appeared on the horizon. Come December 1st, the as-of-yet unnamed version will hit its first alpha and transition into its second testing stage on February 7th. After touching the beta milestone on March 7th, the release is just a small stretch away from its proposed April 25th launch. If the wait feels entirely too long, you can spend time perusing potential pseudonyms for the OS at the more coverage link below.

Mummy Knows Reviews: Katie is back in

Hey all, so I am back from my trip to AZ. We had a lot of fun and I am so glad that Aiden slept on the airplane on the way over. We had fun hanging out with family and friends at the baby shower. But I do have to say Aiden has learned a lot about cause and effect. He has been kind of a brat the last few weeks. Well lets face it he is almost 2, I am sure a lot of you other moms know how that is. Well he was mad about something, so he hit the rocking glider and it rocked back at him. So of course it hit him in the face/mouth and so he got his gum cut a little. It bleed really had at first but he was fine. Poor baby. Then the night before we went home he got into the kitchen. Well I guess he wanted to look at the cans and one fell on his toe. His "big" toe swelled up so bad and it even chipped the nail a little.

(could not get a good pic cause he was moving)

Because of his factor 5 we decided to take him to the ER (that and we wanted to make sure it was not broken). They ended up burning a hole into his nail so some of the pressure would come down. Then they took him for an X-ray. I was so?glad?to have April there to take him back. (I would not take him because I'm pregnant)?Luckily?he had no broken bones so we when home a few hours later.

Needless to say it was midnight by the time we got home. Then and we had to be up and out of the house before 8am to get on the airport But we where able to get on the airplane first because my poor little boy could not walk very well. And of course he did not sleep on the plane this time! He did ok at first, he played with the Ipad and colored. But when we where about about 20 from landing he wanted down so he could run around. So after him crying (no throwinig a huge fit) for a few mins he fell asleep.

When we got off the airplane and got our bags he was SOOOOO happy to see his daddy.

HR Firm Says ?Employees are Ready to Resume Their Careers ...

Sep 26 2012 ? 5:31PM GMT

Posted by: roblimo
2012

?Employees who have been committed to their employers, working hard, taking on more and getting by with less are now ready to resume their career plans,? says HR agency Randstat in their latest quarterly Employee Engagement Index (pdf download), which goes on to say, ?almost 40 percent of employees plan to seek out a new position in the next six months. But with slower than expected job creation and recovery, more than half (58 percent) do not believe they would be able to find a new job today that they would like to accept.? So 40% would like a new and better job, but a majority of that group thinks they won?t find one. Okay?

By ?resume their careers? Randstat apparently means ?look for a news job.? Nothing wrong with that. If every skilled IT person is happy in his or her current employment, there are no job openings and no applicants to fill those nonexistent job openings, which means companies like Randstat would have to close their doors.

Randstat likes to throw out bullet points liked these:

  • 54 percent of employees rank feeling their efforts are recognized and valued as one of the most important attributes that impact their attitudes towards their jobs
  • Just 29 percent ranked feeling inspired to do their best as an important attribute impacting their job, down 4 percent from last year
  • 75 percent of employees say they are inspired to do their best, followed by 73 percent indicating they are proud to work for their organizations
  • 62 percent of employees say that they trust the leaders of their company to make good decisions

?While more than a quarter of employees are ready and waiting for greener pastures, a majority are committed and optimistic about their company?s future and their career prospects,? says Randstat. ?Most employees (61%) expect to grow their their career with their current employer. Just over a third of employees plan to seek a new position within their current company or organization, indicating employees? loyal intentions will grow with their current companies if opportunities for advancement exist.?

These aren?t the kind of things we necessarily think about when we?re interviewing for a new job, but that tend to come up after a year or two, possibly after an even longer period.

It might be a good idea to read this report while you?re doing your job search, but in today?s market, unless you already have a job and are looking for a better one, you probably won?t. But if you?ve been in your current position for a while, you might want to read Randstat?s report and think whether you?re better off staying where you are or whether you should be looking for another job (or a promotion) within your current company or looking for another job elsewhere.

Think of this as your version of the employee evaluations that employers like to fill out about you quarterly or annually (or both).

Turnabout is fair play, right? :)

Myspace?s iLike Rises From The Dead To Block An Apple Trademark Request

ilikeThe icon on the left represents iOS's music app. The icon on the right is for a now-shuttered Myspace service called iLike. Apple introduced the Music app to iOS in 2011. iLike was founded in 2006, granted its trademark 2008, acquired by Myspace in 2009 and then shutdown earlier this year. But in a recent decision by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Apple cannot trademark the icon for the iOS Music app. The reasoning? The marks and services are too similar and would likely cause confusion.

Women twice as likely to suffer infection with kidney stones and other urinary blockages

Women twice as likely to suffer infection with kidney stones and other urinary blockages [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Sep-2012

DETROIT While more men than women develop kidney stones and other obstructions in the urinary tract, women are more than twice as likely to suffer infections related to the condition, according to a new study led by Henry Ford Hospital researchers.

The researchers also found significantly higher rates of complications following one of two urgent treatments for the effects of urolithiasis or stones in the kidneys and urinary tract but stressed that this finding is based on preliminary and more research is needed.

The findings were published today in the peer-reviewed European Urology, the official publication of the European Association of Urology.

Not only did the study find that women are far more susceptible to infection when they develop urolithiasis, it also showed that the incidence of infection, including sepsis a potentially fatal inflammation throughout the body touched off by infection is on the rise.

The rate of related deaths, however, held steady, whom the researchers said is likely a result of "broad improvement in the management of sepsis and the critically ill."

"The research study was conducted because the rate of infection related to urolithiasis was not known, and evidence was unclear about the best method for treating it," said the study's lead author, Jesse Sammon, DO, Urology Resident at Henry Ford's Vattikuti Urology Institute.

Nearly 400,000 adult patients hospitalized with infected urolithiasis from 1999-2009 were identified in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, the largest all-payer inpatient care database in the U.S. Researchers then determined how often they were treated with either of two techniques retrograde ureteral catheterization, or RUC, and percutaneous nephrostomy, or PCN.

In RUC, a catheter is inserted through the ureter to drain blocked urine and relieve pressure on the kidney. With PCN, a surgical instrument is used to pierce the patient's back, and then the kidney.

During the 10-year period studied by the researchers, the incidence of infected urolithiasis in women increased from 15.5 per 100,000, to 27.6. In men, there was an increase of 7.8 per 100,000, to 12.1. Related sepsis rose from 6.9 percent of urolithiasis patients to 8.5 percent, and severe sepsis increased from 1.7 percent to 3.2 percent.

While higher rates of sepsis, severe sepsis and prolonged hospitals stays were found to be associated to PCN, the researchers cautioned that certain important variables required for comparison are not included in available data.

So conclusions that might be used to guide current and future treatment options would be hypothetical, they said, "demonstrating the pressing need for further study."

Glacial youth therapy for the Scandinavian landscape

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young, according to a paper in Nature Geoscience.

In a paper recently published in Nature Geoscience, researchers from the University of Bergen (UiB) and ETH Zurich have demonstrated that ice sheets have extensively shaped the fjords of Norway for the last 2.8 million years.

"However, the massive sediment record deposited offshore Norway during this period tells us a more complex story," explains Postdoctoral Fellow Philippe Steer at UiB's Department of Earth Science and the first author of the paper. "Ice sliding during glacial periods also resulted in eroding the present-day flattish surfaces that form the high-elevation parts of the Scandinavian landscape."

Contradicting previous views

The conclusion of this new study by Steer and his collaborators in Bergen and Zurich contradicts previously accepted views for Scandinavian geodynamics, where high-elevation parts of the landscape were left almost untouched by the repeated ice sheets.

"The origin and fate of the western Scandinavian landscapes under the repeated ice sheets of the last 2.8 million years has been a highly debated scientific topic for a hundred years," says Professor Ritske S. Huismans, head of the research project and a co-author of the paper. "In our contribution we have, for the first time, managed to demonstrate that the glaciers and ice sheets have eroded away both the Scandinavian fjords and flat high-elevation surfaces during the past glacial times. This supports the idea that the mountain range in western Scandinavian as seen today is a remnant of the more than 400 million years old Caledonian mountain range and has been at high elevations ever since."

The researchers believe that this new conceptual model of topographic glacial imprint may also apply to other high-latitude landscapes, such as the one in Greenland.

"This discovery was made possible by linking two fields, onshore and offshore geology that are usually studied separately. Because onshore erosion results ultimately in offshore sediments, it is fundamental to understand the past sediment record to assess the history of Scandinavian landscapes," Huismans explains. "Our research indicates that erosion must also have occurred in the areas above the fjords, e.g. on top of the flat surfaces and demonstrates that these high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young."

The study was made possible because of the large amount of data available for research -- such as seismic profiles and drill cores -- that was acquired offshore Norway by Statoil and other companies. This data offers a very precise image of the Scandinavian sediment history.

Reshaped by glacial erosion

By demonstrating that the entire topography was reshaped by glacial erosion, the study asks for a complete re-interpretation of the tectonic history of Scandinavia.

"This result has important consequences for oil and gas exploration offshore Norway as it aids in the reconstruction of topography in the past, and may also help to better understand past topographic and tectonic evolution of other less-well constrained glaciated areas, such as Greenland. In addition, this study offers a new insight into the landscapes and fjords of western Scandinavia, which are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding areas on the planet, the N?r?yfjord and Geirangerfjord being on the UNESCO world heritage list," Steer says.

Q&A: How Sony simultaneously develops the same game for PS3 and Vita

Shuhei Yoshida is the president of Sony's worldwide PlayStation software development and oversees all Sony's game studios, from Japan to the US. He has worked at Sony for over 25 years and was a lead executive on the original PlayStation project. I travelled to Tokyo to meet him at his office to find out the processes and challenges of developing games that appear on the PlayStation 3 console and the portable PS Vita system.

What is the process for developing a game that is to be released on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita? Are they separate teams?

We do not have a set process. Some of the games we start as a PS3 title and add in a Vita [version] during development. Some other projects are started as Vita titles and a PS3 [version] is added later. For newer titles, we start both from the beginning. It's different for every title.

The performance is quite similar [for PS3 and Vita] unless you're making something like Uncharted or The Last Of Us, which take every bit of [hardware] performance available. The Vita's smaller screen size allows developers to economize on textures and the level of detail so that it can be played on the Vita. Plus sharing the core gaming engine makes it really easy for developers to enable cross-platform play.

What's the development time like for the average Vita game? How does it compare to developing for the PlayStation?

It's about the same time. Moving one title from PS3 to Vita, depending on the title, takes a couple of months. The additional cost and time involved in having two [versions] is not really that significant because of the similarity of the systems.

Are they different teams that work on each version of the same game?

The idea is that the same developer works on both [versions]. They have the perfect control. But when the developer of, say, the PS3 version does not have any more resources available to do the Vita version, we help find the team that are more specialized in making games for the Vita.

For PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, it's SuperBot Entertainment that's making the PS3 version and Bluepoint Games is doing the Vita version. Because it's a fighting game, and because control and responsiveness is crucial?especially when you want cross-platform play?[both teams] work very closely together.

What made you decide to start making games that worked across both the Vita and PS3?

A lot of the ideas came from the developers but we were not sure how people would react. In the past we had this unwritten rule that games had to be made for one platform, but now people are embracing the idea of having the same game across different devices.

So you believe gamers now expect a game they buy to be available on both PS3 and Vita?

Yes. More and more people expect and like that functionality. Going forward we should be more aggressive about looking at titles for which this makes sense, such as those with multiplayer functions or user-generated content functions like LittleBigPlanet.

Is 3D something you would be interested in doing with glasses on the Vita?

When it comes to the screen technology, the OLED screen is really brilliant at avoiding interference?we tried our [stereoscopic 3D] PS3 games on the Sony OLED TV in the past and it looked beautiful. So it's interesting. We haven't really tried it on the Vita, but never say never.

What Vita games are you most looking forward to releasing?

LittleBigPlanet. I started downloading what users were creating for it and it's already very interesting. There's something about the 2D action platformer works really well with portable. But also PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, especially the online play so I can play with other people over the internet. After that, Soul Sacrifice.

Any games from other developers you're looking forward to playing?

Borderlands 2. I haven't got my copy so I'm considering buying it from the US. I was a big fan of Borderlands, the first game, and what I've read is that everything about that game has improved so I'm super excited about it.

Thank you, Yoshida-san!

Ways To Boost Response With Mobile Marketing - Maynas Eric Chua

What is mobile marketing? There are hundreds of ways that somebody is able to promote their businesses through mobile devices. There are many different techniques, and you will have some studying to do to find out what would work best for your audience. In this article, we?ll provide the basics to help you out.

If you have a social network page for your business, link to it on your main business webpage. Many customers these days don?t bother to search for a company?s main site, but rather seek out their social media pages.

Having a mission statement can help keep you on point with your mobile marketing message. Following your principles will enable you to be focused on your target.

TIP! You have to offer your consumer something in return for them purchasing from you. Offering incentives can improve any mobile marketing campaign.

Send Offers

Consumers are looking for a specific value from your mobile marketing campaign. When using mobile marketing, you should ensure that the information that you send is valuable to your intended audience. Keep the type of audience in mind when you send offers. Make sure to send offers that are appropriate and will be appreciated by your target audience. If your audience is the middle class family, you would want to send something that is family related.

Combine mobile marketing tactics with other web media, such as social media marketing. Make your marketing match up nicely with your site. You want to draw people to your homepage. People enjoy interacting and are more likely to buy products at sites that engage their senses.

TIP! Never send unnecessary messages to your customers. Always ensure that what you are saying is relevant.

Avoid sending texts to consumers in the early morning or late evening. Even though a person may like what you have to offer, nobody wants to hear about it at ridiculous hours.

It is just as critical to compare mobile website experience between different devices as it is when you are comparing experiences of different browsers on a desktop computer. There are a variety of different mobile browsers, and each device has a different screen size and resolution. Your website and content might look different on each device. Find out which devices are popular among your customers, and make sure your mobile campaign is compatible.

Have QR codes on your printed ads for the more tech-savvy consumers. Customers can then use their smart phones to reach your website and find coupons. Put them on every printed marketing item, including business cards, catalogs, brochures and anything else. If a customer is interested, the QR code is an easy way for them to learn about your business.

TIP! Make all of the marketing emails that you send mobile friendly. Doing so means your campaign is likely to be more successful in reaching your customers.

Think about creating an application for smartphones that is related to your business. Those apps that offer the user a genuinely needed service are the most successful in popularity and profitability. In order to monetize the app, your options include advertising and selling your products through the app, or profiting through selling the app directly.

You could get more exposure by creating mobile apps. Make sure you offer apps that your customers would find useful. If your customers feel that your app is unnecessary, they will not use it.

Be concise, but also make sure your message is understood. Your customers should access the information they need in a few clicks. Mobile keypads can be quite small, it can get frustrating to do too much typing. Focus on the essential elements of your campaign and get rid of what is not necessary.

TIP! Finding ways to add feedback when people receive your marketing ads is great for finding out how they like what you?re doing, possibly making them a customer too. Customer input is valuable to any business.

Coupons sent via multimedia messaging services can reward your existing customers and entice new ones. Put a promotional code on each coupon. You can link these codes to a mobile site with a tracking code. Offering coupons will entice new customers to your business and at the same time, reward those who are already established customers.

Don?t forget to still take full advantage of your standard website. When you advertise your mobile application on your website, you will increase your traffic. That way, customers who enjoy your main site will be able to join up with your mobile site as well.

If you use voice calls as part of your strategy, you should remember to respect the human element and use a personable, friendly approach. Do what you need to accordingly.

TIP! Work for your target market. Knowing what customers want and providing it is how mobile marketers are successful.

Make sure your information is relevant. It?s easy to go overboard when entering the mobile marketing arena. Be sure your messages have a purpose. Make sure the information you give to customers and potential buyers is relevant. If it is relevant, they?ll give you business.

People looking at your website on their mobiles will not have the same ease of access as computer users. Make sure that the mobile marketing campaign utilizes easy to navigate, simple websites. Although these may seem boring on a computer, they are perfect for your mobile customers, and they keep the access there for both types of users.

Create a campaign that is picture-to-screen. Utilizing a picture-to-screen campaign allows customers to utilize their mobile phones to take pictures. The pictures are sent to a short code and instantly posted to a screen. The photographs can then be displayed on multiple digital billboards or on television.

TIP! If you truly want your mobile marketing plan to succeed, keep your messages limited in number, and make sure each one extends an offer of significant value to the customer. If you do this, then customers are much more likely to find your offers interesting and respond to them positively.

The most successful mobile marketers start small and then expand their services. Take this same approach. Through various processes, you will be able to build as large of a network as you want. Take advantage of everything possible.

Mobile Devices

Always perform usability tests before going live with your message. You want customers to have the option of viewing your messages on a variety of mobile devices. Send the message to your network of associates, family members and friends who will be your testers. Ask them to take a close look at the test message on their mobile devices, checking for readability and usability.

TIP! When starting out with mobile marketing you should only launch one campaign at a time to determine what approaches are most successful. To calculate the success you are getting, you should check your campaign longevity and not the sales numbers.

Mobile marketing has something to offer everyone. If you ask five businesspeople what mobile marketing is, you?ll get six different answers. What might be useful for one business could be useless for another. Hopefully this article has given you some starting points to think about

NewzSocial Debuts A Social News Magazine For iPad That You & Your Friends Create

Channel-ResultsJust when you thought you had settled on your preferred news magazine for the iPad (be it Flipboard, Zite, Currents, or something else entirely), another new contender enters the ring. Today, the NewzSocial app is launching its own version of a social news magazine for iPad, but is offering a different take in order to stand out from the rest. In other magazines, you subscribe to read news from various sources (blogs, newspapers, online magazines, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or you can pick from an editorially selected bundle of sources (like Flipboard offers with its sections on "Home," "Travel," "Photography," "Tech," etc.). But in NewzSocial, you, the reader, curate your own sections which can be as broad (healthy eating) or as narrow (Gluten-free recipes) as you want. And you can collaborate on these sections with friends.

(AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in North Africa on Tuesday called for attacks on U.S. diplomats and an escalation of protests against an anti-Islam video that was produced in the United States and triggered a wave of demonstrations and riots in the Middle East and beyond.

While demonstrations have tapered off in nations including Egypt and Tunisia, protests against the film turned violent in Pakistan and Indian-controlled Kashmir and hundreds of people rallied in Indonesia and Thailand.

In Kabul, the Afghan capital, a suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into a mini-bus carrying South African aviation workers to the airport, killing at least 12 people in an attack that a militant group said was revenge for the film "Innocence of Muslims," which was made by an Egyptian-born American citizen.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the attack killed eight South Africans, three Afghans and a Kyrgyzstani.

At least 10 protesters have died in riots in several countries, bringing the total number of deaths linked to unrest over the film to 22.

U.S. officials describe the video as offensive, but the American government's protection of free speech rights has clashed with the anger of Muslims abroad who are furious over the depiction of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and pedophile.

In a statement, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb praised the killing of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11. The group threatened attacks in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Mauritania, and condemned the United States for "lying to Muslims for more than 10 years, saying its war was against terrorism and not Islam."

The group urged Muslims to pull down and burn American flags at embassies, and kill or expel American diplomats to "purge our land of their filth in revenge for the honor of the Prophet."

Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula recently issued a similar call for attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities. It is al-Qaida's most active branch in the Middle East.

An Islamist militant group, Hizb-i-Islami, claimed responsibility for the attack in Kabul. The group is headed by 65-year-old former warlord Gubuddin Hekmatyar, a former Afghan prime minister and one-time U.S. ally who is now listed as a terrorist by Washington. The militia has thousands of fighters and followers across the country's north and east.

In Pakistan, hundreds of angry protesters broke through a barricade outside the U.S. Consulate in the northwest city of Peshawar, sparking clashes with police that left several wounded on both sides, said police officer Arif Khan. The demonstrators threw bricks and flaming wads of cloth at the police, who pushed them back by firing tear gas and rubber bullets and charging with batons. The protest was organized by the youth wing of the hardline Jamaat-e-Islami party.

In Kashmir's main city of Srinagar, a strike shut down businesses and public transportation as marchers burned U.S. flags and an effigy of President Barack Obama. When the protesters tried to march into the main business district, police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse them, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. Protesters hurled rocks at the troops, he said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

An alliance of Kashmiri religious groups called the strike in response to the anti-Islam film. The shutdown was supported by the bar association, trade unions and separatist groups in the volatile region, where strikes are a common tactic to protest against Indian rule.

In Indonesia, about 200 people from various Islamic groups torched an American flag and tires outside the U.S. Consulate in the third largest city of Medan. Some unfurled banners saying, "Go to hell America," while others trampled on dozens of paper flags. Also Tuesday, about 100 Muslim students in Makassar, a city in central Indonesia, called for the death penalty against the filmmaker, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

Some 400 people protested peacefully outside the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand's capital. Protesters carried signs and banners saying, "We love Prophet Muhammad" and "Stop insulting our religion," and chanted, "Down with America" and "Down with Israel."

The government in Bangladesh blocked YouTube on Monday to prevent people from seeing the video. Mir Mohammaed Morshed, a spokesman for the state-run Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd., said the decision will remain effective until further notice.

Google has blocked access to the video in Libya and Egypt following violence there, and in Indonesia and India because it says the video broke laws in those countries.
